About this hotel

Blacksmiths Arms Inn is a two-hundred-and-fifty-year-old traditional English inn in the village of Cloughton, four miles from Scarborough and set on the edge of North York Moors National Park, making it one of the more characterful countryside options relative to Alpamare's North Bay location. Rooms are attractively decorated with a flat-screen TV and tea and coffee facilities, and some feature a luxurious four-poster bed. The oak-beamed restaurant serves homemade specialities and Sunday lunches beside roaring log fires, and free parking is included. Scenic Robin Hood's Bay is fifteen minutes' drive, and Whitby fourteen miles away, making this a strong base for exploring the coast beyond Scarborough itself. It closes as a genuinely characterful countryside inn a short drive from Alpamare.

  • Historic 250-year-old inn
  • On the moors' edge
  • Free parking

Our take

This suits couples or families who want genuine period character, log fires and a four-poster bed alongside easy access to Robin Hood's Bay and Whitby, and are happy to drive the four miles into Scarborough for Alpamare. The oak-beamed restaurant is a real highlight, though this is not a walkable water park base.

  • Book a four-poster room ahead if that character matters, since only some rooms have one.
  • Combine an Alpamare day with a drive out to Robin Hood's Bay or Whitby, both within easy reach of the inn.
  • Eat at the on-site restaurant on your quieter evenings, since Sunday lunches and homemade specialities are a genuine draw.

Why we love it

Why guests love it

We stayed at Blacksmiths Arms Inn for the character as much as the location, and the log fires and oak-beamed restaurant made for genuinely memorable evenings after driving in from Alpamare each day. The four-poster room felt like a proper treat, and the short drive out to Robin Hood's Bay filled our one non-water-park day beautifully, with a Sunday lunch back at the inn to finish the trip.
