Parque El Agua, the waterpark in El Cardón on the north-east coast of Isla Margarita, has been closed since March 2020 and is being rebuilt, with completion announced for 2027. Choosing a posada while the park is rebuilt
Parque El Agua is shut until its announced 2027 reopening, so choose your base on Margarita's north-east coast by beach, room layout and how you will get around.
Is the park open? No. Parque El Agua closed in March 2020, at the start of the pandemic, and never reopened. In February 2026 the Hoteles SunSol chain, chaired by Armando Pulgar, announced it was reviving the park with Alejandro Scholtz, who spent 35 years as a director and shareholder of Diverland. In August 2026 the project became a partnership with the ZEE, the special zone authority of Nueva Esparta state, and Scholtz said he expected the works to be finished in 2027. No opening date has been published. The February announcement said the date would appear on the park's social media; any offer bundling park entry is unconfirmed.
What will be there when it reopens? The announcements describe a technological refit of the wave pool, new slide towers, a lazy river running through the park, new pools and areas built for the youngest children, and fast-food restaurants. The original park's signature was the Churún Merú, an 18-metre themed slide described as the tallest in any Venezuelan waterpark. Nobody has published height limits or age rules for the new rides yet, so I would not promise a child a specific slide. The new areas for the youngest children are the part I would watch most closely.
Which beach should you sleep by? Four hotels on this page are a short walk from the sand. Puerta Del Sol Playa El Agua is three minutes on foot from Playa El Agua, the island's most developed tourist beach with restaurants along the shore. Posada Los Mangos is two minutes from Playa El Cardón, and Posada Casa Cardón seven minutes from the same beach. Hotel Parguito is four minutes from Playa Parguito, an exposed surf break with rocks, better for teenagers who surf than for toddlers. Its best swell comes from the north-east, it is sometimes crowded, and surf guides list sharks as well as rocks among its hazards.
Most of the others are three to ten minutes by taxi from Playa El Agua, so plan on a car or taxis. Posada Guaicora (8.8 from 101 reviews) and Posada Casa Cardón both run an airport shuttle, which saves the first transfer. Mi Rancho Posada Boutique sits closer to Playa El Tirano. Italcaribe Village and Posada La Bonita are ten minutes back from the beach, quieter, and the right call if you want evenings away from the Playa El Agua restaurant strip. When you compare these posadas, count the taxi minutes to the beach you want, because none of the distances given here is measured to the park gate.
The rest of the list sits five to eight minutes by taxi inland from Playa El Agua. Hotel Vista Hermosa carries the most reviews of that group, 9.0 from 94. Posada Villa Caribee scores 9.6 from 17. Casa Xiloé is the only four-star property on the page, though from just 14 reviews. Posada Citronela (9.0) and Posada Puerto Delfín (8.6 from 59) are both a short walk from the Caney Guayamuri restaurant, and Posada Entre Playas has 8.0 from 16 reviews. Hotel Vista Hermosa is also five minutes on foot from La mejor cocada, a local sweets shop, which makes an easy evening walk with children.
For families who need space, Posada Villa Divina Margarita (10 from 28 reviews) has rooms and apartments sized for groups, a shared kitchen, a barbecue and a backup power generator, the most self-sufficient set-up on this page. Palmazul Suites (9.0 from 60 reviews) works in suites. Hotel Parguito gives every room a balcony and air conditioning. Puerta Del Sol, the closest to Playa El Agua, has the lowest score here, 7.4 from 89 reviews: you trade comfort for a walk to the sand. Villa Divina also has a pool table, dominoes and ping-pong, which keeps older children busy in the evenings when the beach is done.
A traveler's takeI would not book this area for the waterpark until the park publishes its opening date: the 2027 target comes from the developer, not from a ticket page. If you come before then, I would sleep at Posada Villa Divina Margarita with young children, for the apartments, kitchen and generator, or at Posada Casa Cardón if you want breakfast and an airport shuttle with a short walk to Playa El Cardón. Teenagers who surf will be happier at Hotel Parguito. This coast is not for families who need slides at the hotel door: none of these posadas is a waterpark hotel, and Playa Parguito is not a toddler beach.
